Volunteer Opportunities for Children, Youth, and Families

We believe it’s important to start instilling civic engagement early in a person’s life, so we’ve highlighted the opportunities that children, youth, and families can do in one place. Whether you’re a family looking to volunteer as a group, a young person looking to fulfill your volunteer hours’ quota, or a parent wanting to find out how to start getting your kid(s) engaged, we have opportunities for all of those scenarios and more! Below, you’ll find opportunities to start volunteering and resources to get more civically engaged in the Arlington community.

Volunteer Opportunities

703 Warriors

Soccer Assistant Coach (good for ages 16+) – Join the 703 Warriors level the playing field for under-served youth by supporting their Wednesday evening soccer sessions.

Equipment Pack-Up (family friendly, good for all ages) – Want to give back but don’t have a lot of time? Take 30-minutes out of your Sunday evening to help pack up goals and balls after the youth soccer games.

Fitness Assistant Coach (good for ages 16+) – Help under served youth stay active, build resilience, and grow on and off the field on Thursday evenings by supporting soccer practices. 

Digital Storyteller (good for ages 16+) – Give back in a creative and meaningful way by helping 703 Warriors showcase the grit, growth, and glory of kids beating the olds through soccer. 

Affordable Homes & Communities

Support Students in a Free Afterschool Program (ages 13+) – AHC has 7 education centers across Arlington. Make them a success by volunteering to assist with homework, life-skills, reading, and more. AHC will be hosting multiple information session to share what this opportunity will entail.

Pack a Snack, Power a Student! (family friendly, good for all ages) – AHC runs year round education programs at 7 community centers in Arlington. At each program, students receive a bag of tasty snacks to keep them energized and engaged while the study. Help keep AHC’s snack pantry filled by assembling snack bags at home!

Support New Neighbors with a Welcome Baskets (family friendly, good for all ages) – When families into AHC’s affordable housing communities, they are given welcome Bags filled with essential household items to say “welcome to your new home!” You can support AHC by creating Welcome Baskets at will be given to new residents of their communities. 

Monday Home Grocery Delivery (ages 14+) – Ensure low-income senior citizens and families get their free and healthy food for the week by delivering bags of groceries to the Serrano on Mondays. 

Animal Welfare League of Arlington

Junior Fostering (13-17 years old) – Sign-up to give a rabbit or guinea pig a comfortable, loving home while they wait to be adopted by their forever family! AWLA will provide all necessary education, equipment, and support to equip the Junior Fosters the tools for success with their animal.

DIY Pet Food Drive (all ages) – Through the Pet Pantry, AWLA gives out an average of 2,500 lbs of dry food, and 1,500 cans of wet food per month, and they can’t do this without support from the community. Help keep AWLA’s Pet Pantry stocked by hosting a food drive within your school, business, community organization, neighborhood, or more! 

DIY Animal Enrichment (all ages) – Get together with friends and family to support the animals in your community by creating animal enrichment activities! There are activity guides for all types of animals to choose from!

In Shelter Volunteering (16-17 years old) – Support AWLA by helping out within the shelter to improve the lives of the animals staying there. 

Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC)

Gleaning (ages 5+) – Drive out to AFAC’s partner farm JK Community Farm to plant or harvest produce. The gleaning season is roughly from June to November.

AFAC’s Summer Teen Program (14-17 years old) – Teens can apply to come one week out of the summer to volunteer at AFAC. Volunteer Arlington Note: This is advertised from February through May.

Organize a Food Drive for AFAC (all ages) – Organize a food drive within your neighborhood, school, sports’ team, or even group of friends! Food drives help AFAC keep their stock of food plentiful, so they can continue to distribute food to approximately 2,400 Arlington families weekly.

Arlington Public Library

Teen Library Volunteer (Central Youth Services) (ages 12-18 years old) – Support the Youth Services staff with a variety of library programming, maintaining the Youth Services area, and more.

Casa Chirilagua

Good for ages 14+

Read with an Elementary Latino Student – Support Casa Chirilagua’s after school academic, spiritual, and emotional learning for elementary school students on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays. 

The Clothesline for Arlington Kids

Good for 15+ and families

Clothing Drive Coordinator – Lead the charge in collecting clothing for students in need! You can coordinate a clothing drive in your community to ensure students in need get fashionable, clean clothes each season.

Donation Processing Volunteer – Help sort and process clothing donations for The Clothesline’s store in Arlington.

Community of Hope

Good for ages 14 and up

Fam-Club: Games & Crafts with Families Overcoming Homelessness – Take part in the fun and meaningful Fam-Club and make a difference in the lives of youth and families by playing games, doing arts & Crafts, and reading books with families living in Community of Hope’s family shelters. 

Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail

Good for families and chaperoned pre-teen groups/pre-teen individuals

Volunteer at the Mount Vernon Trail – Join Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail in keeping the trail safe and welcoming through trail maintence.

Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia

Good for families and chaperoned pre-teen groups/pre-teen individuals

Volunteer at Girls on the Run’s Celebratory Spring 5K – Each season of Girls on the Run ends with a celebratory 5K that brings together thousands of NOVA girls, their families, and community members. To be a success each 5K event needs over 100 total volunteers in a variety of roles! Help Girls on the Run make this year’s 5K a success by signing up to volunteer. 

Volunteer at Girls on the Run’s Celebratory Fall 5K – The opportunity to volunteer for this event happens every November.

Junior Coaches – Teens (ages 16-18) can volunteer as junior coaches during the fall and/or spring GOTR season.

Goodwin Living

Good for ages 16+

Resident Engagement Volunteer – Engage in fun activities including games, gardening, and art lessons with residents in the Goodwin Housing community.

New Hope Housing

Good for all ages

Join the Bagged Lunch Program – Make bagged lunches from the comfort of your home and deliver them to New Hope Housing’s Residential Program Center. The bagged lunches include a sandwich, snacks, a bottle of water, and/or a treat of your choice.

Become a Meal Provider – Make meals from the comfort of your own home and deliver meals for 6 residents at Susan’s Place once a month.

Northern Virginia Family Service

Early Childhood Classroom Volunteer – Support NVFS’s littlest learners (ages 0 – 3) in the classroom by assisting teachers with children’s activities.

Head Start Classroom Volunteer – Assist teachers with daily activities for 3 – 5 year olds at NVFS’s Head Start Center. 

Thrift Shop Ambassador (good for ages 12 and up) – Help NVFS raise funds for their mission by supporting their thrift store in a variety of roles such as replenishing items on the sale floor, greeting customers, and tagging items. 

Potomac Conservancy

Good for all ages and families

Volunteer at a Potomac River Clean-Up – Help the Potomac Conservancy keep the Potomac River clean by volunteering at one of their many clean-up events.

Second Story

Good for ages 15+

Handyman – Use your handy skills to give back to the community! Tasks may include basic repairs, light painting, and more. 

Traveler's Aid

Good for ages 16+

Support Travelers Aid with their mission to assist passengers with travel and tourism at the Regan Airport.

True Ground Housing Partners

Food Pantry Assistance (family friendly, good for all ages) – Help restock shelves and assist with food donations at True Ground’s Peoples Pantry. There are several shifts throughout the week and on Saturday.

Distribute Food at Fisher House Apartments (ages 16+) – Support weekly food distribution or Arlingtonians experiencing food insecurity. AFAC will be opening a new distribution site at Fisher House Apartments. You can help ensure this new distribution site experiences success by passing out food, helping set up, and helping clean-up.

Soccer Tournament (ages 16+) – True Ground Housing Partners is hosting their first ever, Soccer Tournament, for children living at their properties. Help them create a successful event by signing up for one of the various roles available. 

Terwillinger Place Food Distribution – Help True Ground Housing Partners with their bi-weekly food distribution at Terwillinger Place. Volunteers can expect to assist with bagging and handing out food.

Resources

  • Arlington County’s Teen Network Board – The Teen Network Board is a county and school board-appointed teen advocacy group filled with high school and home school students. They discuss issues, make recommendations, and act to improve the lives of Arlington teens.
  • Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families – The Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth, and Families advocates for families in Arlington County. They have monthly public meetings, as well as resources to support families and youth in Arlington.
  • Arlington County’s Teen Pages – This webpage is run and updated by Arlington County with upcoming events such as after-school programs, open gym nights, and county classes all for Arlingtonians under 18 years old.
